Good News

NEW MEETING IN BOSKRUIN (RANDBURG)

We are pleased to share with the community the establishment of another Nar-Anon Support Group Meeting for Families and Friends of Addicts in Gauteng.

We invite everyone who are struggling from the effects of the disease of addiction of a family member or friend to find help for yourself through attending Group Meetings.

Finding support for yourself will assist you in regaining your own serenity, peace, strength and hope, while directly and indirectly positively influencing your relationship and interactions with the addicted family member or friend.

Place: Akeso Crescent Clinic

Address: 4 Hawken Avenue & President Fouche Drive, Boskruin, Randburg.

Day: Thursday Evening

A Step Three Story

My son has been struggling with addiction for nine years. I have experienced countless “Just for today’s”, several nine month milestones, numerous rehabs, and some near death experiences that I prefer not to remember.

I have been a Nar-Anon member for as long as my son has been struggling. On working my Step Three, I made a decision to turn my will and my life over to the care of God. I put my faith in a power greater than myself and I had faith that my son would eventually find the God of his understanding. I convinced myself that in time he would be restored to sanity and that he would eventually find recovery. ...

~ A Step One Story ~

Before I joined Nar-Anon, I was guided through life by my instincts. Everything that I did was a knee jerk reaction. I was playing the part of a puppet on a string while my  past experiences and upbringing were  guiding my life. There was never any careful thought or consideration - if it felt right I would do it. While working my Fourth Step Inventory I discovered that power and control were my problems. As long as everything and everyone was under my control I felt normal. In retrospect my days were numbered. How long would a wife and three growing children allow me to dominate and control them? How long could I go on controlling everyone and everything before I collapsed in a heap? When would a situation develop that was so uncontrollable that I would have to admit powerlessness? DO YOU NEED NAR-ANON ?

A QUESTIONNAIRE FOR PARENTS, SPOUSE, RELATIVES AND FRIENDS

Ask yourself the following 20 questions and answer them as honestly as you can:

  1. Do you find yourself making excuses, lying or covering up for your child/spouse/friend?
  2. Do you have reason not to trust your child/spouse/friend?
  3. Do you find yourself making excuses, lying or covering up for your child/spouse/friend?
  4. Do you have reason not to trust your child/spouse/friend?
  5. Is it becoming difficult to believe his/her explanations?
  6. Do you lie awake worrying about him/her?
  7. Is he/she missing school/work often, without your knowledge?
  8. Is your spouse missing work and the bills piling up?
  9. Are the savings mysteriously disappearing'?
  10. Are the unanswered questions causing hostility and undermining your marriage'?
  11. Are you asking yourself, "What's wrong?" and "Is it my fault?"
  12. Are your suspicions turning you into a detective, and are you afraid of what you may find?
  13. Are normal family disagreements becoming hostile and violent?
  14. Are you cancelling your social functions with vague excuses'?
  15. Are you becoming increasingly reluctant to invite friends to your home?
  16. Is concern for your spouse, child or friend causing you headaches, a knotty stomach, anxiety?
  17. Is concern for your spouse, child or friend easily irritated by minute matters? Does your life seem a nightmare'?
  18. Are you unable to discuss the situation with friends or relatives because of embarrassment?
  19. Are your attempts at control frustrating?
  20. Do you over compensate and try not to make waves?
  21. Do you keep trying to make things better and nothing helps?
  22. Are the life style and friends of the loved one changing? Do you ever think that they may be using drugs?

If you have answered "YES" to four or more of these questions, NAR-ANON may be able to assist you with the answers that you are looking for.
